Was it Deathstroke the Terminator? Elle Driver? Nick Fury? Or was it Snake Plissken?

This is a recent commission piece.

Wow...I love this. What are you working on these days? A regular title?

One regular title due from Oni Press next year, an OGN and maybe an ongoing book with Dark Horse. I'm in the down side of the work cycle where I'm working REALLY hard but I don't have much out at the moment :(

Thanks for the kind words, Shane! This was one of many, many mental commissions I've been asked for recently. More to come soon!

Very cool. At least you have stuff coming out! :)

So color-me-this Batman...have you been given a lot of grief over your "retro-style" of art? Has that been a sticking point with editors?

And do you talk to a lot of editors?

I'm curious as I've run up against this a lot it seems. Moreso I think the problem lies in the fact that I work in different styles and in the end my portfolio just confuses editors. :\

Not a massive amount of grief from editors over my style - generally if they've approached me in the first place, they know what they'll get from me. Also, although I love retro comics art, I'm also influenced by manga and I try to stay in touch with what's coming down the pike, style wise (guys like Jason Latour, Tom Fowler, Eric Canete etc.). I've also been lucky in that the editors I am "close" to tend to quite like the retro style, or they don't see it as retro so much as "indie". If that makes sense?

I do get a lot of "that's too cartoony" type rubbish from fanboys though, and I'm aware my style isn't exactly mainstream. But then, neither is, say, Cameron Stewart or Chris Samnee or Darwyn Cooke, and they all seem to do quite well.

As to the "confusing portfolio" question - I feel your pain. I kind of want to draw like everyone I love, you know? The trick is synthesizing all those elements into something approximating a style. Not sure I'm there yet :)

Yes. I see what you mean. It's good you have it locked in then.

It's the synthesis that's hard for me. Just like a hammer doesn't fix everything I'm still trying to find a tool in my box of styles that has the broadest ability and keeps me challenged.

I guess it's more like a buffet where you're only allowed to eat potatoes while ones taste is more varied an exotic.

Onward and upwards... :)

Thanks for the explanation.

No problem. Though to clarify, I don't feel I have it locked in at all. The terror never really goes away :)

By the way, I'm looking through your deviations, and hot damn you are GOOD.
